Mercedes-Benz launches GLA compact SUV

German luxury carmaker Mercedes-Benz has introduced another new variant based on its highly successful A-Class platform.

The GLA is the first Mercedes-Benz in the fast-growing compact SUV segment with dimensions measuring 4,417 mm in length, 1,804mm in width and 1,494 mm high. According to Mercedes-Benz, the GLA boasts a drag coefficiency of only 0.29, offering a lively performance on country roads as well as dynamic and efficient motoring on the highway.
The high-quality appointments, developed with full attention to detail, and the flexible interior clearly position the GLA as a compact premium SUV. The GLA is the first Mercedes-Benz SUV to be optionally available with the new-generation permanent all-wheel-drive 4MATIC system, with fully variable torque distribution. The GLA-Class is the fourth of five new compact models from Mercedes.
The company says the sales figures strongly demonstrate how well the new compact models are being received by customers. In the first half of 2013, for example, 173,362 of the A- and B-Class and the new CLA Coupé were delivered worldwide. Especially gratifying is the high conquest rate of the new A-Class: around 50 per cent of buyers in Europe come from other brands.
The concept of the GLA is to offer a flexible and variable interior. The rear seat backrests cannot only be folded down completely but are also adjustable for angle if required. The generous luggage compartment is well-presented and can be loaded without difficulty, thanks to the low sill and the wide tailgate which opens automatically as an option. The particularly rigid body structure provides a reliable basis for a wide range of applications.
The GLA will celebrate its world premiere at the Frankfurt Auto Show from September 12 to 22.
