People are at the core of the Democrat Party, Watanya “Madame Dear” Bunnag said as she announced the party’s contenders for Bangkok’s 33 constituencies on Tuesday.

She said that even though many Democrats had resigned, the party had also gained many new members such as herself.

Watanya joined the Democrat Party on September 22 last year, a month after she quit the ruling Palang Pracharath Party.

“It’s usual for there to be loss after every change,” she said, comparing the Democrat Party to a big tree that sheds leaves before bearing fruit.

She said this change proved that the Democrat Party has a strong ideology, which is why it has survived in Thai politics for 76 years.

“Many political parties have been dissolved as they focused only on winning the election,” she said. The Democrats, on the other hand, have been prioritising people since it was formed on April 6, 1946, she said.

Watanya added that the party was working hard on preparing for the upcoming general election, which is tentatively scheduled for May 7.

“We want to emphasise that it is people who are at the core of the Democrat Party,” she said, adding that the party’s Bangkok MP candidates were ready to tackle all issues faced by people.

She also called on former party members to come back and work with the party to improve people’s quality of life.

Watanya, the wife of Nation Group CEO Shine Bunnag, worked as a government whip while in the ruling party. She also led the Dao Roek (Fixed Stars) group comprising mostly young female MPs working actively in Bangkok.
