Heavy rains bring more misery to parts of Thailand

THURSDAY, AUGUST 31, 2023

Isolated heavy rain is forecast for most parts of Thailand today, especially in the North, the Northeast and the East, the Meteorological Department said on Thursday.

These conditions are due to the strong monsoon trough lying across the North and the Northeast, and a moderate to strong southwest monsoon prevailing across the Andaman Sea and the Gulf, the department added.

It advised people to beware of possible flash floods and overflows, especially along foothills near waterways and lowlands.

For sea conditions, waves in the upper Andaman Sea and the upper Gulf are 2-3 metres high and over 3 metres high in thundershowers. The lower Andaman Sea and the lower Gulf, however, will experience calmer seas with wave heights of about 1-2 metres.

All ships in the upper Andaman Sea and the upper Gulf should proceed with caution and avoid stormy conditions.

Typhoon Saola meanwhile has moved to the northern part of the South China Sea and is expected to make landfall over the coast of southern China from September 1-3. This storm has no direct effect on Thailand.
