In response to the government's wage-hike policy, Charoen Pokphand Group has raised scholarships and allowances for its university student trainees.

This year's scholarships, extended to 135 students at 23 institutions, are worth Bt2 million, or Bt15,000 per head - Bt3,000 higher than last year. The trainee allowance has also been raised from Bt170 to Bt300.

In giving reasons for the changes, the agricultural conglomerate said students were shouldering a higher financial burden because of the higher cost of living.

An official from CP's chairman's office, Vichitwong Chanarat, said the move was in line with chairman Dhanin Chearavanont's high-price, high-economy idea, which proposes that prices for agricultural products should be allowed to fly high, with the government hiking pay rates to meet higher costs of living.

Since 1979, the group has extended scholarships to poor third- and fourth-year students in agriculture, science, engineering, veterinary science, journalism, economics, business administration and computer studies. Recipients can also enjoy summer training at CP.
