Jarunan Ithiawatchakul, the human resources boss of Thailand's largest mobile-phone company Advanced Info Service, is launching her new book "Managing People Beyond Textbook 2". This book is a follow up to the first edition, which made a successful debut

Jarunan said the book is aimed not only at HR professionals but any business executive considering that business and people management have become much more complex. The worker generations issue is among the thorny subjects that managers from the older generation need to understand and adjust themselves to cope with the lifestyles and needs of the new generation staff, she said.
Published by Krungthep Turakij Bizbook, “Managing People Beyond Textbook 2” is divided into four sections: winning through leadership, winning through management, winning through thinking differently, and winning through learning.
Author Jarunan shares her more than 20 years of experience in HR in this Thai-language book over 200 pages. She began her career in HR with Colgate-Palmolive (Thailand) before moving to AIS. Currently, Jarunan also assists AIS’ parent firm Shin Corp on strategic HR issues.
Speaking at the book launch recently, Jarunan said she likes every chapter in the book but if she had to choose only one, she would single out chapter 11 titled “How to set and achieve your target”.
“That chapter reflects the theme of this book, which suggests that one should consider some available principles and frameworks, but at the same time also realise some practical thoughts before taking an action,” she said.
Unlike the previous book, “Managing People Beyond Textbook 2” includes content from various books, which Jarunan narrates in her own style while sharing her experiences and adding some practical tips and reminders for implementation. Among others, the book includes the 20 bad habits that leaders should avoid taken from Marshall Goldsmith’s best-seller “What Got You Here Won’t Get You There.”
“Don’t try to win everything. Sometimes you should stop and allow other people to look good. You will be loved by your subordinates, gain their confidence, and energise them,” said Jarunan, citing Goldsmith’s “winning too much” bad leadership habit.
Achara Juicharoen, a local representative of Marshall Goldsmith, said “Managing People Beyond Textbook 2” is recommended as a “how-to” book for business people in every discipline as it is distilled from the hands-on experience of Jarunan, who is widely recognised as an HR veteran.
