DHL Express, a leading global express service provider, announced yesterday the launch of its $2.7-million (Bt109 million) distribution centre on Rama III Road in Bangkok as part of the company's expansion plan to support increasing demand in Thailand.

This is the largest investment DHL has made in recent years, reaffirming its long-term commitment to Thailand, the company said. It also underscores the importance of Bangkok in complementing DHL Asia’s hubs in Hong Kong, Singapore and Shanghai, with the last scheduled to be launched in July.
Equipped with cutting-edge technology, the new 2,448-square-metre distribution centre on Rama III is the company’s fifth in the Bangkok area. With enhanced facilities, the centre has the capability to process up to 3,700 shipments per day.
Chananyarak Phetcharat, managing director of DHL Express Thailand and Indochina, said that this year the company was moving forward with a number of initiatives to further its expansion plans in this country. Rama III is strategically located in central Bangkok and is close to major transport links. With this new distribution centre, the company is now closer to customers in Bangkok’s main business zones, including the Silom and Sathorn areas.
“The investment underscores our strong commitment to growing our business locally and to tap the vast growth opportunity in the country,” Chananyarak said.
Yasmin Aladad Khan, senior vice president of DHL Express Southeast Asia, said Thailand remained an important hub for DHL Express in Asia. The company will continue to invest in facilities, products and service capacity as well as personnel to capitalise on opportunities arising from the implementation of the Asean Economic Community in 2015.
Rama III is the first DHL Express distribution centre in Thailand to use state-of-the-art equipment such as the dual weight dimension labelling (WDL) tool for the re-weighing process. With a maximum output of 600 pieces per hour, the new scanner will increase the rate of data transfer, thus improving overall efficiency and reducing turnaround time.
In keeping with DHL’s commitment to increase its carbon efficiency by 30 per cent by 2020, energy-efficient lighting and the incorporation of power-save options in equipment are some examples of the initiatives implemented in the new centre.
