GMM Grammy said at a press conference today that Uefa has just reacted to its quest for a change in the broadcasting rights, to cover TrueVisions clients.
GMM Grammy, as the broadcasting rights holder in Thailand, said that Uefa cited in the letter that such request came too late as the tournament already begun.
TrueVisions subscribers' TV screens have been blank since the tournament started on June 8.
National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission's consumer protection committee yesterday urged the company to waive the monthly fee, to compensate the mishap. The NBTC from today also slaps fine of Bt20,000 per day on TrueVisions.
Here is the Uefa's letter:
"We revert back to you regarding your sub-licensing requestion of Uefa Euro 2012 media rights to TrueVisions.
Unfortunately, we have to inform you that your sub-licensing request for TrueVisions at this stage is coming too late as the tournament is already well underway.
In addition, TrueVisions aren't owned or affiliated by GMM Grammy and therefore cannot transmit any Uefa Euro 2012 programmes.
TrueVisions had an earlier opportunity to acquire Uefa Euro 2012 rights from Uefa directly. Furthermore, GMM Grammy deliver greater free TV exposure in Thailand through the sub-licensing of rights to free-TV (terrestrial analog signal) channels 3, 5 and 9 and we are very happy with this free to air broadcast platform.
TrueVisions however is a pay channel no matter if they carry free-TV channels on their platform or not and we do not see the rational or merit of extending such rights to TrueVisions.
Unfortunately on this basis we cannot approve your Uefa Euro 2012 sub-licensing request for TrueVisions and no Uefa Euro 2012 footage/programmes may be used by TrueVisions.
Thank you for your understanding.
Yours sincerely,
