Only 16 Thai enterprises - led by PTT, the national oil and gas conglomerate - are included in Forbes' list of the 2,000 top global companies.

Aside from PTT, the Kingdom’s largest public company, which ranked 144th on the list with market value of US$32.9 billion (Bt945 billion), others included Siam Commercial Bank (No 447), Kasikornbank (524), PTT Global Chemical (607), Siam Cement (633), Bangkok Bank (640), Krungthai Bank (735) and Charoen Pokphand Foods (914).
Others are Advanced Info Service (964), Thai Beverage (1,080), Bank of Ayudhya (1,086), CP All (1,257), Thai Oil (1,368), InTouch (1,604), Total Access Communication (1,833) and Thanachart Capital (1,853).
Thailand is one of 63 countries to appear among the 2,000 entries, up from 51 in 2004 when Forbes magazine inaugurated the list. These companies are ranked according to equal weighting of sales, profits, assets and market value.
“Countries standing out in terms of growth across all four metrics are Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia. Belgium, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates saw the biggest increase in company market values, all with double-digit growth from a year ago,” the magazine said.
On the contrary, the current economic crises in Spain and Greece took a toll on their firms’ profits, with each country showing a combined deficit this year. Companies in Italy show a decline in all four metrics this year.
One surprise this year was Industrial and Commercial Bank of China unseating ExxonMobil as the world’s biggest company for the first time. Another Chinese bank, China Construction Bank, moves up 11 spots to No 2 on the list. Also in the top five are JPMorgan Chase, General Electric and ExxonMobil.
In total, the Global 2000 companies now account for $38 trillion in revenues (up 6 per cent), $2.43 trillion in profits (down 7 per cent), $159 trillion in assets (up 7 per cent) and $39 trillion in market value (up 7 per cent). These firms also employ 87 million people worldwide. All metrics are up from a year ago, except for profits.

Dynamism
This year’s list again reveals the dynamism of global business, Forbes said. There are 543 members from the United States, 19 more firms than last year, bucking its declining presence since 2004 and registering its highest total since 2009. Japan (251 members) again has the second-biggest presence on the list despite losing seven more members from last year.
Mainland China (136 members) checks in as the third-largest country in terms of membership, with same number of firms from a year ago. This is the first year since 2004 that China has not increased its number of Global 2000 companies. There are 11 countries with only one firm on the list, including New Zealand, the Czech Republic and Vietnam.
