Chananyarak said 400 of the company’s employees had voluntarily collaborated with the Royal Forest Department on the “Ton Kla” (“Young Plant”) initiative in the Banglamung national forest in Chon Buri province. Under it, thousands of trees were planted.
The DHL volunteers had nurtured the tree seeds for three months for the purpose of reforestation, with the seeds provided by the department under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.
This partnership is part of DHL’s corporate responsibility initiative in Thailand which aims to encourage voluntarism among its employees to make a positive contribution to the Thai society.
Chananyarak said the volunteers worked at either DHL Express, DHL Supply Chain, DHL Global Forwarding, or DHL e-Commerce.
The project is part DHL’s GoGreen project to help as part of Global Volunteer Day 2016.
“We worked with the Forest department and they suggested this planting site near Chon Buri. It’s also convenient for us to transport our volunteers,” the executive said.
Global Volunteer Day was initiated in the Asia-Pacific in 2008 and soon expanded to the United States, the Middle East, Africa, and Europe .
Since 2013, it has been a global, group-wide initiative and in 2015 more than 110,000 DHL employees took part in about 2,700 activities worldwide.
Kevin Burrell, chief executive officer for the DHL Supply Chain Thailand, Philippines and Vietnam, said: “Global Volunteer Day helps to encourage employee volunteerism as well as foster employee engagement to make a positive difference to the communities which we operate in throughout Thailand.”
“Our commitment to GoGreen provides a framework that is continuously aimed at reducing the impact of our business on the environment while offering sustainable logistics to our customers,” added Thomas Tieber, CEO DHL Global Forwarding Asean and South Asia .
By 2020, Deutsche Post DHL Group aims to improve its CO2 efficiency, including that of its sub-contractors, by 30 per cent compared to the 2007 baseline. In 2015, the group improved its carbon efficiency by 25 per cent as compared to 2007.
For Global Volunteer Day 2016, employees all over the world take part in a variety of social projects addressing various local needs. All activities contribute to the group’s three main focus areas: GoGreen (environmental protection), GoHelp (putting our expertise to work to provide emergency relief to people in need) and GoTeach (improving educational opportunity and employability).
