Ks 1.3 billion in inedible food seized at borders

Since 2012, mobile inspection teams have seized and destroyed more than Ks 1.3 billion (US$1.3 million) worth of food unfit for human consumption that had been imported from China, Thailand and Bangladesh, according to the Prevention and Control of Illega

There have been nearly 500 seizures over three years at Myanmar borders such as at Muse, Myawady, Tamu, Techilek and Kengtung.
On March 18, the committee confiscated and burned six types of snacks, including jams and preserved plums in 70 packages arriving from China.
Since January 11, the Ministry of Health has prohibited some snacks with Chinese labels and 10 unregistered drugs imported from China, Thailand and India.
The seizure of spoiled foods and contraband consumer goods is on the rise, according to the committee’s statistics.
The value of confiscated prohibited goods jumped to Ks 391.8 million in 2013 from Ks 274 million in 2012. Among the contraband were frozen foods, imitation meat, juice, drugs, chemicals and agricultural compounds. Two-thirds of the seized goods are from China.
