Google has launched its Android One smartphone programme in Myanmar, making it the seventh Asian country where the low-cost smartphones are sold.

Following the launch in India nine months ago, Android One has expanded to Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, the Philippines and Turkey

In Myanmar, the company has partnered with Cherry Mobile, also its partner in the Philippines, to release the “Cherry Mobile One”.

The phone’s price tag is US$99.

"We hope the arrival of Android One helps put great smartphones into the hands of more people across Myanmar, and we look forward to working with our partners to launch more devices in more countries over the coming months," said Caesar Sengupta, vice-president of product management at Google.

The company hopes the arrival of Android One will allow Myanmar’s consumers to experience the benefits of a smartphone.

The device is powered by a 1.3GHz quad-core processor and has a 4.5-inch 480x854-pixel display. It comes with 1GB RAM and 8GB expandable internal memory. It has a 5MP rear camera and a 2MP front camera. It runs the latest version of Android (Lollipop 5.1.1) and also offers dual-SIM support.
