Thailand's best-known cultural show opens a theatre in Phuket

Tourists heading to the Phuket now have an additional treat to occupy their evenings thanks to the opening last week of Siam Niramit Theatre. This is the second branch of the popular cultural hot spot on Bangkok’s Ratchadaphisek Road, which has been pulling in the crowds since being launched by Ratchada Niramit, operators of Dream World amusement park, more than five years ago.
The new venture, which cost Bt2 billion, is spread over 57 rai and features a 1,740-seat theatre, a Thai village covering all four regions with a floating market, an elephant performance stage, restaurant and souvenir shop.
The main attraction is the 70-minute cultural performance by a troupe of local artists in beautiful costumes. Through special effects and exquisite backdrops, spectators learn about history of Siam, rural life in bygone days, folk customs and religious beliefs.
“We want to make a world-class show that portrays the history, art and culture of the kingdom. We have to thank the beauty of Thai culture and architecture for giving us the inspiration for our show,” says chief executive officer Pannin Kitiparaporn. “We guarantee that spectators will be enthralled by the special effects, avant-garde lighting techniques and our 100 scenes, which are thoroughly researched from history books and discussed with experts on Thai culture.”
Walking around the village of the four regions allows visitors to appreciate the beauty of Thai-style wooden houses in different designs and affords a fascinating glimpse of the traditional lifestyles, arts and crafts and cuisine of rural Thailand.
There’s even a temple fair where you can enjoy typically Thai games such as throwing a ball in a sao noi tok nam corner and tossing plastic basins. Nearby, young artists showcase their skills in martial art, fencing and cultural dancing performances.
And for those with an appetite, the 400-seat restaurant offers a variety of delectable dishes, desserts and beverages laid out buffet-style. Souvenir hunters will find a wide range of top-quality handicrafts, fashion accessories, wooden decor items, wooden toys and ceramics.
