Re: "Coins of the Realm", Life, October 22.

I enjoyed the recent article and I would like to mention some additional facts and corrections. I have collected Thai money for a long time, and two books I have found to be indispensable are “Standard Catalogue of Thai Coins” and “Thai Banknotes Catalogue”, both published here in Thailand.
Bullet money ceased to be legal tender in 1904 and was not minted during the reign of King Rama VI. Also there are two fuang to one salung and two salung to one baht. At that time a one-baht coin was 15.2 grams of .925 (sterling) silver, so a thousand baht would weigh almost 500 ounces. Thai-currency dealers can be found on eBay and Delcampe. Thai money can be bought and sold through the Eurseree auction house in Bangkok. Britain’s Queen Victoria gave King Mongkut (Rama IV) a used coin-press to create the first general run of Thai flat coins, known as Bannakarn. Shortly after, the king purchased a new coin press that was installed in the Grand Palace.
