A well-known philanthropist leads her friends and colleagues in raising funds to help those with Alzheimer's

The Group of Philanthropists (“Khana Phoo Kor Karn Dee”) recently launched “Banthuek Klai Jai” (“My Beloved Journal”), a book that chronicles the journeys, thoughts and memories of Associcate Professor Onchuma “Khru Aew” Yuthavong. Illustrated by Krirkbura Yomnage, it aims to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorder Association (ARDA). The book launch took place at Thewet Room, The Crown Property Bureau recently.

Onchuma, who also founded the group, says the book is supported by Dr Sirintorn Chansirikanjana, head of the Division of Geriatrics, Ramathibodi Hospital, Professor Thep Himathongkam, CEO of Theptarin Hospital and Atchara Tangmatitham of Supalai.
“This project aims to support the ARDA and to educate the public on dementia and memory-related diseases, as well as raise awareness about Alzheimer’s and the difficult role played by the caregivers of Alzheimer patients. Such diseases can be prevented or at least delayed while those affected must be properly cared for. This is particularly important in Thai society, as many still regard dementia in a negative light, making it difficult to care for patients,” she notes.
This book compiles Onchuma’s memories, journeys and observations and is beautifully illustrated by renowned artist Krirkbura, who has made the journeys more vivid.
“The book also has ‘spaces’ for the reader to write down their own memories, so that in the future they can look back and cherish those memories when they begin to fade. They can be reminded of beautiful moments in life when reading the book, because some people may lose their memories completely and not even remember the events they have written down with their own hand,” she says.
At the launch event, participants enjoyed a range of brain-challenging games such as throwing balls, origami art, and 3x3 table games. Onchuma joined a discussion titled “Older and More Graceful” along with Dr Chatchanee Chatikavanij, founder of OPPY Club (Old People Playing Young Club), and Satawat Amnuayruangsri, who shared his stories about caring for the memory-challenged.
“My Beloved Journal” is sponsored by The Crown Property Bureau and Amarin Printing and Publishing. It costsBt295 and can be ordered by calling (084) 9073245 or emailing [email protected].
