Almost comically, though, she had a good excuse for being “unavailable” on this Valentine’s Day – she was editing the movie “Love Sucks”, her directorial debut.
Donut wrote as well as directed the film about a woman in her 30s who’s “recovering” from heartbreak. Its unique take on the situation is that a woman doesn’t have to be unhappy just because she’s single again. “I saw that happening and thought, ‘Why does it have to be that way? What happened to women’s self-esteem and pride?’”
Donut is no stranger to production work, having toiled behind the scenes on many short films and TV commercials. After graduating in fine arts from Srinakharinwirot University, she took a course in digital-film marketing at the New York Film Academy. “I still love acting, but I’ve done all sorts of characters and I want to use my experience to be a director,” she says. Evidently we won’t see her again onscreen anytime soon, but she’s keeping her eye out for a decent role.
Meanwhile she’s just finished a short film promoting next month’s big concert by the great 1980s band Nuvo. Packed with Nuvo hit songs, the promo is being broadcast exclusively on Sanook.com until tomorrow. “I’m glad I had the honour of taking up this project – I think everyone who loves Nuvo will be moved by the film,” she says.
Donut is set to be a TV series producer as well. She pitched a show to Channel 3 and they liked it. Production begins in April, when her choice of lead actor is freed up from other tasks. Before then, “I haven’t got a lead actress yet and I have to find the right one!”
Sounds like our favourite Donut is going to be booked up right through next Valentine’s Day.
Benz mulls a monkey
Pornchita “Benz” Na Songkhla is another actress interested in producing a TV series, but she says the time isn’t right yet. “It’s a tough job and you have to have the experience and the respect,” she says.
Benz was asked about upcoming plans when she and husband Boromwut “Mick” Hiranyadthiti attended a Valentine’s Day event in Kanchanaburi. Instead of becoming a TV executive, she wants to be a mum.
After a year and half of marriage, they’re ready for a little one. “It’d be great if she gets pregnant this year so the baby is born in the Year of the Monkey,” Mick chuckled. “So there’ll be a third monkey in the family!”
Benz expects to be a good mother and wouldn’t mind portraying one on TV at the same time. “Unlike many actresses, I really don’t mind taking the role of a mother. As long as it’s a good role, I’d be happy with it.” Veterans like Jintara Sukkapat and Pissamai Wilaisak are still at the top of their game, she pointed out.
As for that business of producing a series, she said, that can wait another decade.
