NOTHING SPELLS out elegance more than furniture and accessories made from highly polished wood but all too often such wooden pieces are too chunky to fit in a compact living area.
That’s no longer the case thanks to Alltag, a new player on the Thai furniture scene, which launched its first collection at the Thailand International Furniture Fair back in 2013.
The company is the brainchild of Songvuth Manachaiyarak, a graduate in product design from Rangsit University and Annop Jareonkitpoolpol, who studied architecture at King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Lat Krabang then headed to Singapore to work with a leading design company.
“We reunited in late 2012 after Annop came back to Bangkok and decided to design a range of furniture and accessories that was both attractive and functional for anyone living in a condo unit,” Songvuth explains.
“We spent a few months developing our designs using mainly oak and cherry wood, steel and textiles and were fortunate enough to be among the designers selected to showcase our products in the Design Plant zone of the Thailand International Furniture Fair 2013. People liked what we were offering and we received lots of orders from a Hong Kong buyer and local shoppers.”
The name is German for everyday life and is an apt description for the range of functional furniture offered by Alltag. Fashioned from imported cherry wood, oak, teak, walnut and ash, the pieces are finished so that the natural texture stands out, bringing an air of elegance to even the smallest room.
Alltag’s latest collection features a cherry wood Book Box storage unit, a Plank coat stand with a detachable acrylic shelf and a Porro dining table topped with a tempered glass top. Customers are invited to browse the catalogue and choose their favourite wood to match other furnishings in their home and accessorise with such attractive home decor items as a Muka adjustable teak table lamp with a metal structure and round wood tray, a white ceramic ceiling lamp with a glossy texture and a Vetro mirror that can double as a bookcase.
Other best sellers include the matte-lacquered Mono desk with a removable storage unit, the Unie floor lamp equipped with mirror, wooden shelves and concrete base and a knockdown Martorra shelf that can be assembled in eight styles and in different sizes.
Wood left over from the furniture making has been fashioned into a curved wall clock that plays with light and shadow, seesaw-inspired pencil trays and polygon trays.
Alltag’s products are available at Maggio furniture store and cafe on Sukhumvit Soi 101/2, Room Concept in Central Embassy and Jam Factory, and Another Story in EmQuartier.
