Mr Grant seems not to understand the fundamentals of democracy. While the UK does not have a written constitution, democracy is endemic in the very culture and make up of the country.
Democracy starts with the people. It is based on the will of the people. It is the people who appoint their lawmakers to represent them in parliament. Members of Parliament are the peoples’ appointees; the peoples’ servants, and servants do not order the boss. Parliament exists and acts in accordance with the wishes of the people. If they fail to do so they can be removed by the people.
Opposing the will of the people is anti-democratic. While democracy is a form of government controlled by laws, there is one thing over which the law has no control and that is democracy itself.
Parliament is representative of the people. The people are NOT subjects of parliament. When the people have decided by national referendum, it is not for their agents to question or oppose that decision. That’s like the tail wagging the dog.
The great mistake of career politicians is their assumption that they control the people. The most recent example of that is the election for president in the USA. The people decided who their next president should be, not the entrenched politicians, the puppets of bankers and large corporations and their mainstream media lackeys. The establishment is in a state of shock. They’ve just been reminded that government of the people is for the people by the people.
