Let there be light

Let there be light

Luxury furniture, lighting and home accessories retailer Motif Group celebrates 12 profitable years with the launch of an Anglepoise pop-up store on the second floor of Central Embassy.

The store, which has its slogan “An Iconic British Brand, Anglepoise”, is home to an exhibition covering the 85-year history of Anglepoise through many original lamps brought out from the UK.

In 1932, when vehicle suspension engineer George Carwardine invented a spring, crank and lever mechanism that could be positioned with the lightest of touch yet would maintain its position once released, a blueprint for the first Anglepoise task lamp was born. The lamp went on to achieve iconic status and its engaging, anthropomorphic form is recognised and admired all around the world.

Over the years the lamp has been developed under the careful watch of the founding Terry family, without ever losing sight of its primary function. From the creation of the “Original 1227” lamp, to the development of extended collections by esteemed industrial product designer, Sir Kenneth Grange, to recent collaborations with renowned designers Paul Smith and Margaret Howell, incomparable British design remains at the heart of this progressive British brand.

Visitors can view the “Giant 1227”, a larger-than-life light commissioned by the Roald Dahl Museum & Story Centre, which evolved into a substantial collection that included the first Anglepoise lamps for outdoors.

“Anglepoise x Paul Smith” created in 2014. continued an illustrious design heritage for the brand with the Type 75 desk lamp, designed by Sir Kenneth Grange in 2006, providing the perfect canvas for Smith’s masterful colour-by-component approach.
