The Office of Knowledge Management and Development (OKMD) recently celebrated honour books with distinctive covers by presenting the inaugural OKMD Book Cover Awards 2017 at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre.

The awards were divided into four categories, namely Very Thai, Cute Cute, Striking Stumble and One of a Kind
“The contest is OKMD’s first Book Cover competition on a national level. We invited book publishers across the country to submit their books with exceptional covers to compete for the prestigious titles, which will be publicised to the general public and encourage more and more publishers to create outstanding book covers. We realise that book covers are the front doors to the world of reading. Therefore, the award has been conceived to be the stage for publishers to showcase their works to a wide audience. New ideas and techniques will encourage society to appreciate the art of book cover designing. The contest saw 59 book publishers submitting a total of 405 works,” said OKMD president Dr Athipat Bamroong.
Namsai Supavong, the winner of the Very Thai category for her cover titled “Thai Thai Nai Lok Luan Anijjang” from Salmon Books, revealed that the design combined Thai elements and contemporary style that invited readers to discover the inside contents.
Kanjana Phonprasit, the winner of the Cute Cute category for the book “Ma Ja Therapy” from Banlue Book, said that she would like to thank OKMD for staging this competition, which brings out the designer’s potential and promotes creativity in graphic works like her cover design.
Wachira Ruthirakanok, the winner of the One of a Kind category for the book “Little Chiang Mai” from Rabbithood Studio, said that his idea in designing the book cover was inspired by the question of whether a travel book would still work in the age of online information.
The winner of the Striking Stumble category went to Santi Lawrachawee for the book titled “Musashi” (Design Edition) from Open Books.
The judging committee was made up specialists from various fields, among them Dr Seree Nonthasoot, Surachai Puthikulangkura, Montakarnti Rungsipramanakul, and Suquan Bulakul.
