Bangchak Drives Growth via Digital Innovation and AI Shift

THURSDAY, JANUARY 08, 2026

Bangchak Corporation partners with Fujitsu to deploy SAP S/4HANA and AI, doubling business scale while pioneering sustainable aviation fuel models.

In today's rapidly evolving business landscape, Information Technology (IT) has become a critical driving force, and no longer plays just a supporting role.

This transformation is evident in the case study of Bangchak Corporation, one of Thailand's leading integrated energy companies, which has leveraged technology to reshape its operational model, competitive approach, and value delivery.

The energy industry faces challenges around sustainability and changing consumer behaviors, and digital capabilities have become a key differentiator in achieving ambitious business expansion goals.

Moving Beyond Service Stations: Bangchak's Ambitious Vision

Bangchak has evolved far beyond being a fuel retailer, with businesses spanning two refineries, over 2,000 service stations, more than 1,000 Inthanin coffee shop branches. The company currently operates with five core strategies:

1.    Refinery Business, Integrated Marketing Business, and Bio-Products Business
2.    Crude Oil Trading Business (Bangchak Trading), with offices expanded to Singapore and the Middle East
3.    Upstream Business for oil exploration in Norway
4.    Energy and Infrastructure Business, covering renewable energy and data centers
5.    New Businesses and Holding Business, operating as a fund for high-performing companies

Bangchak Drives Growth via Digital Innovation and AI Shift

This business diversification reflects Bangchak's ambitious goal to double its business within three years, which requires comprehensive digital infrastructure to support various operations throughout the entire process.
Digital Transformation in Energy Business: Integrated Enterprise Platforms to Support Complex Operations

The complexity of the energy sector, spanning from refineries, retail, sales, and renewable energy operations, requires integrated technology platforms beyond the capabilities of legacy systems. Fujitsu Thailand, as SAP's regional strategic service partner in Asia Pacific, collaborated with Bangchak to bring regional and global expertise into service delivery, operational management, and elevating service standards both within the organization and external consulting services.

Bangchak implemented RISE with SAP S/4HANA to prepare for the near future in utilizing quality and standardized data with AI. The goal is to ensure sustainability and adaptability of data to support growth in business groups that require decision-making in short timeframes and in real time. The implementation also enables visibility of data flow throughout the organization—whether at refineries or service stations—through a cloud solution enhanced with AI and automation. These capabilities address challenges specific to the energy industry, such as managing volatile commodity prices, optimizing supply chains across multiple product lines, and ensuring regulatory compliance while maintaining operational efficiency for comprehensive operational visibility.

Technology Drives Strategic Growth: The Esso Acquisition

Bangchak's acquisition of Esso demonstrates how technology drives strategic growth in the energy sector. The challenge in integrating such businesses was merging the operations of two major energy organizations, from refinery management to retail networks, to create a unified platform capable of managing the country's second-largest fuel distribution network. To support this transformation and prepare for doubling business expansion, Bangchak committed to upgrading multiple platforms to seamlessly support doubled operations while maintaining a return on investment (ROI) exceeding 15%.

AI Application to Elevate Energy Workforce Capabilities

As technology plays a role in reshaping energy operations, workforce capabilities must evolve in parallel. Bangchak's commitment to developing AI skills for over 1,000 employees, representing 70 to 80 percent of its core personnel, reflects the energy sector's true transformation toward data-driven decision-making. The initiative empowers employees to leverage AI in optimizing energy distribution networks, predicting equipment failures, and making real-time operational decisions—capabilities that enable leading energy organizations to differentiate themselves in highly competitive markets.

Data-Driven Organization: From Fragmented Data to Strategic Analytics

Bangchak's strategy transformed data management from fragmented data warehouses to an integrated analytics platform. The focus is on security-by-design alongside creating business value through advanced analytics and AI-powered real-time insights, which are critically important when managing millions of customer interactions from thousands of service points. This centralized data architecture enables the organization to identify patterns and conduct predictive analytics that concretely enhance competitive operational advantages.

Technology Enabling Modern Energy Transition: Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)

Technology enables energy businesses to move toward sustainability. Bangchak's used cooking oil purchase program for producing Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), "Tod Mai Ting" (Fry to Fly) project, is a clear example of how digital platforms can help create new renewable energy business models. The purchase of used cooking oil at 20 baht per kilogram creates incentives for citizens to return waste to the circular economy system.

This process requires complex logistics management to collect used cooking oil from 162 participating Bangchak service stations. This initiative not only opens opportunities for new energy business models during the energy transition period but also reduces pollution from improper oil disposal and lowers health risks from reusing old oil for cooking.

Catalysts for Energy Business Digital Transformation

Bangchak's digital transformation journey demonstrates how technology is significantly reshaping the energy sector. As energy operators face both operational complexity and sustainability imperatives, digital capabilities have become a critical factor distinguishing "leaders" from "followers.

" Success in this new context requires platforms that integrate all parts of the business, from refineries to retail networks, including analytics systems that enable forward-looking predictions rather than just reactive problem-solving. Furthermore, customer engagement technologies transform commodity transactions into experience-driven relationships, while sustainability solutions play a crucial role in driving concrete transitions from conventional energy to alternative energy.

The reality for energy business leaders today is clear: technology is no longer just "nice-to-have" infrastructure but rather the foundation that enables businesses to compete in a rapidly changing industry. Organizations need to partner with technology providers who understand both the technical complexities of energy business operations and the strategic challenges in navigating industry transformation.

As consumer expectations change, regulatory pressures intensify, and sustainability becomes central to business strategy, energy companies that achieve their growth targets are those that leverage technology not merely to enhance operational efficiency but also to "design entirely new business models" for a cleaner, smarter, and truly customer-centric future.
