Phitsanulok’s annual mango harvest has sparked a gold rush in the lower North province, as prices plummet due to oversupply. With international travel and exports blocked by Covid-19, Phitsanulok farmers are desperate to find customers for growing mountains of their world-renowned Nam Dok Mai mangoes this year.

Negotiations with South Korea over the export of Mahachanok or “rainbow” mangoes, which began in 2011, were finally completed last month, Deputy Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Mananya Thaiset said.

Thailand’s fruit farmers have been handed a simple and eco-friendly way of protecting their crop and boosting profits: recycled paper. The special wrapping to protect ripening fruits from pests is made by Chonburi’s AP Recycle Industrial company with a grant from the Technology and Innovation-Based Enterprise Development Fund (TED Fund).

Dr Suvit Maesincee, Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (NIMT), said this week that Thailand had finally been able to export the gold-hued Nam Dok Mai mango to the US after 12 years of trying. Ripened mangoes had long faced export problems due to the different import regulations imposed by various countries to prevent disease and keep out insects.
