Seminar in Bangkok to focus on cultural heritage amid rapid urban growth

Siam Society Under Royal Patronage worked with the Southeast Asian Cultural Heritage Alliance to organise a seminar regarding "cultural heritage" so as to highlight the issue of Bangkok as a city confronting sustainability issues.

Asia Heritage Series EP1

The growth of urban communities is a common experience in the development of several major Asian nations, where the issue of "sustainable development" has been seen as one of their major challenges.

Business leaders or policymakers typically prioritise economic performance at the expense of the community's cultural heritage, environment, and quality of life.

This may prompt the question: Why can't "urban growth" and "sustainable development" go hand in hand?

Siam Society Under Royal Patronage worked with the Southeast Asian Cultural Heritage Alliance to organise a seminar regarding "cultural heritage" so as to highlight the issue of Bangkok as a city confronting sustainability issues.

"Every building is a missionary. I don't build a house without predicting the end of the present social order.” – Frank Lloyd Wright

March 18, Saturday

2.30pm – 4.15pm

Siam Society (Asoke-Montri Road)

Seminar: Krung Thep Su Chee-wit (Bangkok’s Survival)

On the way to becoming one of the “capital cities of Asia”, Bangkok has lost its identity. The fascination with Thai traditions as well as the vibrancy of local Thais has been dwarfed by gleaming rows of skyscrapers. The city is only intended to be a business place.

Some people may refer to this movement as "killing the goose that lays the golden eggs”, which implies that it is merely a change made to cope with the current circumstances.

“How can we protect and maintain the precosity of Bangkok's identity?”
