A live-streaming session in Phuket on Wednesday to sell Thailand’s tourism products and services to the Chinese drew over 15 million viewers and generated more than 150 million baht in revenue.

The second such event from Thailand, titled “Super World Trip Boss Live”, was conducted by Trip.com Group, a multinational travel service conglomerate headquartered in Shanghai.

It was held in partnership with the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) as part of the “Thailand Trip: A Must for Chinese” campaign.

The previous live-streaming event was held at a hotel in Bangkok on January 31, drawing over 20 million online viewers and generating more than 220 million baht in revenue, according to the TAT.

With total sales of over 370 million baht for both events, the agency said that it expected this project to boost demand for Thai tourism in the Chinese market. The livestream sessions are aimed at building confidence among Chinese tourists planning travels in Thailand.

The TAT aims to attract as many as 8 million Chinese tourists to Thailand this year – more than double the 3.5 million last year but still far below almost 11 million seen in 2019, the year before the pandemic struck.

Between January 1 and February 11 this year, a total of 811,853 Chinese tourists arrived in Thailand, due mainly to Thailand’s visa exemption for Chinese passport holders. Both countries have agreed to offer “permanent” visa-free entry to their passport holders starting from March 1.

The TAT has held activities to promote Thai tourism and the country’s positive image among the Chinese. These include holding trips for Chinese media and influencers as part of the efforts to draw in as many as 8 million visitors from China this year.
