Boosting sugar industry with R&D

The National Research Council of Thailand is allocated over Bt100 million per annum for sugar-related researches, to help improve the competitiveness of the sugar industry.

Soottiporn Chittmittrapap, secretary-general of the council, said that there is little research though the industry has generated over Bt100 billion in foreign income.
The researches eligible for the funding can cover sugar cane breeds and integration of innovative plantation methods to increase yields, which shoudl benefit the value chain from farmers to sugar millers.
"In a key industry like this, continued R&D would boost the growth as well as its competitiveness against other countries. R&D has been slightly applied to this industry. This will be the new beginning," he said.
