Just when we're wondering if a good party would ever come to town, Champion Sound is treating Bangkok party people to a two-room showdown of the scene's biggest names in house and hip-hop at Bed Supperclub.
It all happens on Thursday, and in the Bar Room, you'll get your techy house fix from Eddie Halliwell in his long-awaited Bangkok debut. The internationally known British DJ was named DJ of the year by leading dance music magazine Mixmag in 2003 and 2005.
Like a lot of big names, he has recently switched from playing trance and hard house to playing a more club friendly electro and house sounds. Halliwell has held residencies at Goodgreef, Gatecrasher and Cream in Ibiza and is a former resident DJ for BBC Radio 1, hosting his own weekly show.
His success has visibly boomed over the years, particularly with Halliwell's own concept ED-IT (Eddie DJing with Integrated New Technology), launched in August 2009.
His Bangkok gig is supported by Bed's resident Fred Jungo.
American DJ and musician Grandmaster Flash mans the deck in the White Room. Regarded as one of the three inventors of hip-hop, the other two being Kool Herc and Pete Jones, Flash and his former group The Furious Five were the first hip-hop group to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007.
It has been said that Flash's pioneering mixing skills transformed the turntable into a true "instrument", and his ability to get a crowd moving has made his DJ sets legendary. The New Yorker of Barbadian descent became involved in the earliest New York DJ scene, attending parties set up by early luminaries just after he finished high school. Flash carefully studied the DJ-ing styles and techniques of earlier DJs and, as a teen, he began experimenting with DJ gear in his bedroom, eventually developing and mastering three innovations that are still considered standard DJ-ing techniques today. One of the prominent skills include Backspin Technique using duplicate copies of the same record, Punch Phrasing that isolates very short segments of music and Scratching. Although Flash did not invent the technique himself, he had a major part in perfecting it and making it a performative aspect of party DJ-ing.
Already honing himself as the scene's leading DJ, Flash is also known for heading up the Furious Five. Quickly gaining recognition for their skilful raps, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five pioneered MC-ing and freestyle battles.
Flash is also the man behind such classic hip-hop records as "The Message" and "White Lines".
In 1977, the new group began performing regularly at Disco Fever in the Bronx, one of the first times a hip-hop group was given a weekly gig at a well-known venue. And that was probably when the scene first heard of what is hip-hop today.
Grandmaster Flash is supported by DJ Tech 12.
