Keen to report something from Thailand other than crazy politics, the foreign news media have happily latched onto Ja Turbo, our jet-engine dirty dancer.

The gyrating pub singer with 16 million hits on YouTube was dubbed “Thailand’s hottest act at the moment” by the Australian newspaper The Age, one of many outlets offering innuendo if not actual translation for her song title “Kan-hu”. Yes, of course it means “itchy ear”.
CNNgo’s report worked readers into a frenzy. Someone called “We Love Thai” insisted that Turbo isn’t “Thai in the brain”, in the sense that no Thai would dare cavort in public like that. “Crazy girl and making Thailand look bad. Just one stupid stinky!”
Reader Jack: “C’mon, it’s just entertainment like Britney Spears. Why can’t Thailand have Ja Turbo? Oh no, declare a state of emergency!”
Over at The Age, one commentator drew a parallel with Thailand’s class struggle: “For conservative Thais it’s okay to have one of the most famous, lucrative sex/slave trades in the world as long as no one talks about it.”

Yanee is mending
TV host Yanee Chongvisut is on cover of the latest Hello! magazine and inside talks about her divorce in February after 20 years of marriage. “Yes,” she admits, “sometimes I feel lonely.”
Yanee’s four-storey house used to feel small when her son and ex-husband were living with her, but it seems “rather big” now that Frankie, 17, is studying in Australia. These days it’s just Yanee and two maids.
Her husband initiated the divorce. He asked her on February 3, about a week before their anniversary. Yanee was shocked, but accepted that love had abandoned them. They’d become more independent, spending most of their time on separate floors of the house. “I’d even thought about asking for a divorce but didn’t dare.”
Her life is back in full swing again now. She’s in touch with her pals and has a close male friend, but she’s not ready to jump into any commitments.
