Special day for hungry people

You see a sign that says “free kanom kai” and you just know you’re going to get some. Thank His Majesty the King, in whose honour a nondescript little cake shop in the Old Siam Plaza was giving its wares away for his birthday.
There were three signs on the glass cabinet, in fact: “Free kanom kai one bag per person”, “Free kanom kai on December 5, Father’s Day” and “Wish the King good health. We love the King”.
We really didn’t need that much convincing.
Among the many ways to celebrate the King’s birthday, this has to be one of the most delicious, but there were even more tasty tributes on Monday.
Someone posted a photo of the kanom kai shop on Pantip.com, and soon readers were sharing information about other sources of birthday munchies.
A place in the Wang Lang Market near Siriraj Hospital was giving away sushi. And a lad na noodle outlet near the Central Prison declined to accept money – but you had to eat on the premises.
Why? “To be the present for the King!” the owner declared, bringing smiles to his customers’ faces.
You still have a chance to fill up in His Majesty’s honour. Vendors on Nawamin Road sois 46 to 48 give away food every year from December 2 to 6, but due to the flooding, that’s been extended this year to Sunday.

Worth a shot
Some cynics weren’t completely sold on Prime Minister Yingluck shinawatra’s hospitalisation “due to food poisoning”. They heard she was vomiting and, having studied soap operas in university, suspected she was pregnant.
Stray street crackpots? No, these were Government House reporters. As such, they neglected to come right out and ask her about it.
It took a week for one of the news hounds to muster the courage. Finding Yingluck back on the job and in a cheerful mood, she asked about a possible baby. Yingluck’s eyes popped, and then she burst out laughing. “No, I’m too old to get pregnant!”
