No such thing as a 'snow tiger'

MONDAY, DECEMBER 26, 2011

Chiang Mai's Night Safari - or your paper, or both - mislead the public with the picture and caption of the '"snow tiger'" cub on December 25.

There is no such species as a '”snow tiger”, and a “snow tiger” has nothing to do with snow. It is a product of selective inbreeding, purely for novelty or commercial value. It comes from white tigers, themselves selectively bred and consequently with a high incidence of birth defects and cub mortality. White tigers are not a separate species, and have no conservation value whatsoever. They are more like a freak show, displayed for the public to gawk at. Sadly, with little real explanation from the establishments that exhibit them, the public’s ignorance is only perpetuated. It should be the role of a responsible media to expose the deception, not join it.
