Dubway Session disciples are in for a real treat tomorrow night, as this time round the party organiser is bringing in three guests to keep the dance floor moving all night long.
Joining the residents at the decks are guest luminaries DJ IRK, Bellaboo and Stockholm sweetheart Josefine Jinder – aka Little Jinder. She might be young and small, but her sound is big and bold, influenced by New Order, Kate Bush, IDM, and the rich musical history and environment of her native land.
Jinder says she discovered synthesisers right around the same time she discovered boys. She was 20 when she came to international attention with her first EP, 2008’s “Polyhedron” on Trouble & Bass, then followed it up a remix edition featuring epic reworks from Supra1 and Black Holes. Her most recent single, “Youth Blood”, debuted in 2009 and became an instant hit with the club vampires.
Jinder chatted to us by e-mail before leaving for the airport.
What are you up to now?
I’m preparing my next release, a single called “Keep on Dreaming”, which comes out on February 21 on Trouble & Bass with remixes from people like Starkey and Deadbo. You can download the instrumental version of it on facebook.com/littlejinder!
How did you become a DJ?
I’m actually more of a songwriter and performer. I DJ a little, but like James Murphy said “it’s the best paid, easiest job on the planet” - no offence. It’s nothing I’m really interested in. All different kinds of music appeal to me but there was a freedom in electronic music when I started making music. There was a way of not having to be an amazing instrumentalist. I am good at recording and editing and learned to make music with machines that could make all different kinds of sounds rather than playing one instrument. I do play a few instruments now.
What kinds of music did you grow up listening to?
My mother is a folk musician so quite a lot of that. Dad's totally into funk, so a little of that too. I had an indie period, then got heavily into electronic music when I was 15 or 16 maybe through Joy Division and New Order. I also got obsessed with Radiohead, Art of Noise and Warp Records stuff.
What’s the UK music scene like, compared to Sweden?
I lived there six years ago and was basically just in the studio all of the time so I didn’t really keep track of what was going on.
How would you describe your sound and DJ style?
There’s only one thing that’s constant through my tunes and my shows and it’s my voice. Don’t know how to describe how it sounds, but it’s probably the only thing that sounds the same.
Who would you like to collaborate with the most?
I’m not saying; it’ll jinx it!
What’s the plan for tomorrow night?
Come down and you'll see!
Not jinxed by Jinder
