The author George Monboit and the Harvard researcher Caroline Elkins are, to the say the least, somewhat narrow and very negative concerning the British Empire and its place in history.
In modern times most people attribute the fall of communism to primarily the US and its SAC (Strategic Air Command) and its Navy arm of nuclear submarines. Some say "Yea we beat the commies" True the Soviet Union and China were the two big red spots that definitely were aware that if they started something the USA would finish it. But in reality we only held them in check.
Over a 400-year period the great countries of Europe sailed and claimed much of the world as their colonies. Gradually that came to an end. But one nation stands out: Britain. Why? Of all its colonies not one fell to the communists. And why? The Brits put in roads, the better to transport goods; they established a judicial system so people could settle differences; and last and most important, they established the English language as a common means to communicate on a personal, commercial and international basis. The other Europeans colonisers did not. There is no question the British Empire was the primary long-term reason that communisn failed. The communists simply could not conquer British colonial real estate. We owe the Brits: they kept free enterprise free.
