Raising age limit for those who buy smokes would be good move

Ref: "Smokers face harsher fines, age limits in new law", National, August 17.

I agree with the Ministry of Public Health issuing a directive to raise the age of smokers who can buy cigarettes from 18 years to 20 years and prohibit dividing up a pack of cigarettes so that teenagers have more difficulty gaining access to cigarettes.
But I am not confident that it will work. With existing laws, authorities still leave vendors free to sell cigarettes around educational institutes. There are many vendors selling a cigarette from a pack even though it’s illegal to have no labels warning of the dangers from smoking.
In addition, vendors do not request to see ID cards from teenage students. Surely most of them have ages lower than 18 years.
Law enforcement is an important measure to get vendors to sell cigarettes ethically, to prevent teenagers to easily gain access to cigarettes at present.
However, the best way to solve the problem at its core is to draw them away from cigarette smoking. Otherwise, they will likely get hooked on serious drugs.
