Nostalgia was in the air last Saturday night at Impact Arena, Muang Thong Thani, as the audience travelled back in time to revel in the music of the 1980s.
Many sang and danced along to the golden oldies leaving their children, who didn’t know the songs never mind the artists who had sung them, sitting still and looking bored.
Ad Carabao, who had been scheduled to close out the night, was first out on stage, singing his hits “Wanipok”, “Khon La Fun” and “Thalay Jai”. He was followed by the originally planned opener - a medley of foreign songs from the disco era - before Jennifer Kim stepped into the spotlight for an emotional rendition of “Thang Rak Thang Klied” and “Rak Thi Yaak Luem”.
The always popular Ben Chalathit was next, drawing applause from the crowd as he performed “Lom Hai Jai Haeng Khwam Khid Thueng” and “Huajai Thi Thod Wang”.
The kids in the audience perked up a little when young Academy Fantasia singer Nat Sakdathorn sung “Jai |Khon Khoi” and “Duang Rudee”, but sank back into somnolence as Kong Saharat performed “Phieng Sobta” |and “Sak Wan”.
Od Ronnachai, the front man of 80s’ pop band Khiriboon, was welcomed with screams and appreciative applause, wowing the older crowd with his hits “Ror Wan Chan Rak Ther” and “Adeet Rak Yam Yen”.
After a brief intermission, each of the contributing artists, now joined by Tor Saksit, returned to the stage, each performing a medley of Thai oldies from The Hot Pepper, Dokmai Pa, McIntosh, The Innocent, and Sao Sao Sao.
Nat told the audience that he would have loved to cover Suchart Chawangkul’s songs but unfortunately didn’t get the chance, then delighted the crowd by humming the intro to “Jai Rak”.
The retro concert came to an end with a second medley of foreign songs and an encore, The Carpenters’ “Yesterday Once More”.
