Their last party in Bangkok was unanimously dubbed one of the wildest nights of 2012. Next week, Australian-British drum-and-bass rock group Pendulum will return to Bed Supperclub for another night of mayhem.
Since its inception in 2002, Pendulum has been hailed “the biggest electronic music act since the Prodigy”. They have headlined many of the world’s biggest festivals and sold out stadiums everywhere with their high-energy performance and unique cross-genre drum-and-bass sound.
Formed in Perth in 2002, the group was originally comprised of producers Rob Swire and Gareth McGrillen, who worked in tandem with a local DJ named Paul “El Hornet” Harding. One of the team’s initial releases, “Vault”, became a sensation in the drum-and-bass community in 2003, benefiting greatly from high-profile placement at the beginning of J Majik’s “FabricLive” mix album.
Pendulum’s style consisted of a fusion of drum-and-bass and other electronic genres, alternative rock and heavy metal, with the inclusion of acoustic instruments. This creates a sound reminiscent of electronic rock, albeit with much more prominent drum and bass and, more recently, dubstep influences. The members of Pendulum are fans of progressive rock and progressive metal, which inspire them to fuse multiple genres, as is standard practice in those genres.
In 2005 Pendulum made their full-length album debut, “Hold Your Colour”, featuring the singles “Tarantula” and “Slam”. That same year the group scored its biggest hit to date with a remix of the Prodigy classic “Voodoo People”, which broke into the Top 20 on the UK singles chart.
Following a couple of one-off singles – “Painkiller” (featuring the Freestylers) and “Blood Sugar” – Pendulum signed to Warner Music UK and made their major-label debut with 2007’s “Granite”, which became a Top 30 hit. “Propane Nightmares” (2008), the second release, was an even bigger hit, breaking into the Top 20 and setting the stage for a second full-length album, “In Silico”, in 2008.
“In Silico” went on to reach platinum status in Britain as well as just missing out on the UK No 1 album chart spot. Returning to the studio, Pendulum set about writing their third album, “Immersion”. Released in 2010, the album shot straight to the top of the chart, and featured collaborations with the Prodigy’s Liam Howlett, Porcupine Tree’s Steven Wilson and Swedish metal rock group In Flames.
In support of the album, Pendulum embarked on a world tour, playing two sold-out shows at London’s Wembley Arena and headline slots at some of the UK’s largest festivals.
Rob Swire announced via Twitter earlier last year that there would be no further Pendulum live shows and there are no current plans for a new album in 2013, but El Hornet and MC Verse still perform DJ sets across the world.
