Bangkok’s iconic Bed Supperclub on Sukhumvit Soi 11 is counting down to its final farewell on August 31 and its regular patrons are beginning to feel the pain.
After more than a decade as one of Asia’s most prominent entertainment venues, Bed Supperclub will be closing its doors at the present premises when the lease expires at the end of August.
“I feel very sad, not least because Bed has been my second home for a long time,” says Sakol Kripian, the club’s Maitre d’ told us. Sakol has been with the club for almost seven years and has become friends with most of the regulars, who think of him as Bed’s mascot.
“I wasn’t going to work at Bed to begin with.” Sakol recalls with a smile. “I was recruited to work at Long Table when the management team was forming and my boss asked me to fill in at Bed Supperclub while I was waiting. And I never left! It was one of the best decisions I ever made. What I like most about Bed is that it’s iconic – both in terms of its look and its concept. Every night is always different, even for someone like me who works here almost everyday. In the early evening there’s a theatrical show during dinner and that changes very often. Later in the night, there are different DJs spinning in both rooms until late.
“The club offers just about every kind of electronic music you can think of, and sometimes there’s live music and shows, too. The creativity here is non-stop and more inspiring everyday. I’m sure that many guests are drawn to Bed because of the vibes they can’t find anywhere else. The management pays a lot of attention to detail and ensures quality service, and that’s part of what makes Bed stand out,” Sakol adds.
A little over a decade ago clubbers in Bangkok were blown away by the gigantic white cylinder that shot up behind the run-down row houses and makeshift stores on Sukhumvit Soi 11, which had yet to offer any signs of its potential to become the city’s most happening area. The Soi is also close to Nana district, one of the capital’s infamous “red light” areas, so when Bed Supperclub professed to be a high-end club offering world-class DJs, few people believed the hype. There were complaints too about the club’s dress code policy that requires guests to look nice, with many sneering at the club for being “ridiculously pretentious” and “too Western for Bangkok”.
But the management stuck to its guns. Besides undertaking ID checks, bouncers have always made sure that patrons of both sexes adhere to Bangkok’s strictest dress code policy. It didn’t take long for Bed to become the hotspot for the bold and the beautiful. International DJs started jetting in and out of Bangkok, inspiring local amateurs and helping the club music scene to flourish. Bed Supperclub put Bangkok on the global clubbing map.
The club’s partners are now actively seeking a replacement site that better suits its positioning as a premium venue catering to the higher end of the night time entertainment market.
“The last 11 years have been truly inspiring and we enjoyed coming up with so many new creative themes, performances and stunning costumes to amaze our dinner guests. We’ve brought in some of the world’s greatest DJs and achieved the status as one of Asia’s most highly regarded dance venues. In a way, the need to move from our site gives us a chance to end on a high note and we are looking forward to the creating the new Bed Supperclub experience,” says managing director Paris Batra.
In the meantime, Bed Supperclub is continuing to serve its patrons with different themed parties nightly and aspiring local and jaw-dropping international DJs manning its deck. Sumptuous and creative dinners prepared by the talented Edoardo Bonavolta are also served daily, in bed.
