Lalita "Pam Tavedikul, founder of the Superstar Academy and producer of Channel 3's "Thailand's Most Famous", popped in to see us this week to announce yet another school where you can learn all the ins and outs of showbiz.

The World Star Academy is a “more affordable” sister for the Superstar Academy and will be opening on November 28 near the Prakhanong Skytrain station. “Most of the locations will be just as easily accessible,” Pam said of future expansions. “We want to open 10 branches in Thailand and within two years outside the country – to be able to cash in on the Asean Economic Community.”
Her students can meanwhile “cash in” on Pam’s connections. She’s managing director of Orchestra Entertainment, which produces talent shows for Channels 3, 5 and Modernine, so her pupils can count on chances to strut their stuff on television. “We boost the kids’ confidence about being onstage and send them to casting calls so they gain experience.”
A singer herself, Pam has music and education degrees from schools in the US, and she’s committed to grooming talent for a fast-growing industry. But she’s aware there are lots of youngsters who can’t afford her coaching fees, so she also has a free “classroom” on Facebook – look for the “worldstarthailand” page – and a channel of the same name on YouTube.
“It’s a community for those who love singing, and you can learn from me without any expense,” she said of the Facebook page, which currently counts 22,500 fans. She regularly uploads video tips and the kids can add clips of them singing and ask for comments and suggestions. Plus, there’s a weekly singing contest, with the winner claiming Bt1,000 in cash and a day’s lessons with Kru Pam.
The Facebook page doubles as an event and activity calendar. Right at the top of the page her fans and students can find out about free dance courses and workshops offered elsewhere in any of the performing arts.
Meanwhile Pam continues composing and producing tunes for a planned album of her own, though she admits the pace has been slow. “I just released my second single with a Brit-rock style called ‘Chao Wan Mai’ [“New Morning”]. I hardly have any time to work on the album, so I just finished this one track and released it.”
Yes, the second single coming more than a year after she started on the album isn’t exactly what you’d call speedy work, but who can blame Pam with all the other stuff she has on the go? With all her plans and activities, she’s got plenty of good excuses for being late with her personal projects. While she’s taking on the whole of Asean, we’ll just have to content ourselves with enjoying “New Morning” and looking forward to the next one.
