FUELLED BY LOTS of suds from Tiger beer, the upcoming Tiger Translate event features the Bangkok debut of three lads from Bangor – Irish indie rock outfit Two Door Cinema Club along with special guest acts from Malaysia and Thailand.
The band, which features vocalist Alex Trimble, guitarist Sam Halliday and bassist Kevin Baird, may not have a following here in the City of Angels but the trio aims to change that with a set that they promise will set the stage on fire.
Two Door Cinema Club – the name is said to have come from Halliday’s mispronunciation of Tudor Cinema – formed in 2007 and made a name of themselves by uploading their post-punk revival, synth-pop tunes to MySpace. Soon after they quit college and began pursuing their musical careers in earnest. Their debut album “Tourist History” won Choice Music’s Irish Album of the Year 2010 prize and the follow up “Beacon” reached top position on the Irish album charts within a week of release, with the music video of “Handshake” going viral.
With a third album on the way, the group is taking a break from the studio.
Another highlight of the upcoming event is award-winning punk group Kyoto Protocol from Malaysia. Starting off as a cover band in a local pub, the quintet went on to win second place in Yamaha Asian Beat Malaysian Finals and launched their debut, “An Album”, in 2011 with sensational hit singles “Pussycat” and “Never Know”. The album was also nominated for Best New Artist from Anugerah Industri Muzik 2011 and won the Breakout Award from Shout Awards in 2012. Kyoto Protocol has performed extensively at festivals in Malaysia and regional stages including Baybeats in Singapore, BeastieRock in Taiwan and the recent Future Music Festival Asia 2013 in Kuala Lumpur where they shared a stage with Bloc Party, The Temper Trap and Psy.
Representing Thailand is Tabasco, winner of Best New Artist from Season Awards 2013. The indie group makes regular appearances in music gatherings and festivals in Thailand and all over Southeast Asia, and has earned an even bigger following with the recent launch of their debut album, “1984”.
Tiger Translate, traditionally a fun event where music meets art, promises to serve up more of the same. Apart from cool sounds and cold beers, punters can enjoy unconventional and street art. and fashion by young and aspiring Thai artists. Launching exclusively at the party is Tiger X Urface Bag Collection, a funky collaboration between Thai street artists and with Urface fashion bags. There are also sneakers, watches and accessories.
