You can’t exactly describe it as hasty, the superstar Thai-American singer pointed out to appreciative chuckles, “considering that I’ve known Mor for half my life”.
The press had merely felt struck by “lightning” because it was unaware Tata had even got back together with her long-time beau Mor. They certainly appeared very happy while facing the assembled reporters and photographers, Tata keeping things lively with her great sense of humour. “I beg you to keep my marriage registration private,” she said, “but you guys can now address me as ‘Ms Tata Sinapongpipit’.” In other words, she probably hasn’t made the marriage formally legal (perhaps for financial or citizenship reasons), but she’s comfy wearing Mor’s surname.
The erstwhile Tata Young actually went into detail about the chronology of their relationship. She and Mor met when they were 16 and had indeed been an item, but then split up, only to reunite in May, when they happened to meet in Phuket, where he has a hotel business. Mor came to Bangkok and proposed to her on May 20.
“He told me he wanted to take care of me and have kids with me. While he was proposing, he cried and said he loved me very much,” Tata explained poignantly, adding that she felt she’d “wasted too much time on others”. So they got down to planning their dream wedding – a quiet ceremony on a beach in Phuket, just the two of them and the priest (and a photographer). “That was where we first fell in love,” she said.
Asked what Mor gave Tata as a dowry, the couple declined to say, apart from showing the ring on Tata’s finger. “I don’t want anyone to look just at its face value,” Mor said. “It’s a seven-karat diamond, but I think it’s suitable for Tata, and it represents my love for her.” Their “love nest” will be in Bangkok rather than the southern island. “It’s a house on Soi Soonvijai [off Petchburi Road] that we helped to decorate four years ago, before we broke up,” Mor said.
“We want to have kids right away and we’re thinking about having three,” Tata declared, acknowledging that she had to consult carefully with a doctor due to health issues. “I don’t think my health is an obstacle,” she said, and Mor agreed that, if she’s happy, she should be okay.
Tata’s fans were assured that marriage won’t keep Tata off the stage. “She can continue her work in the entertainment industry,” Mor said. “I want to support her in doing what she loves, which is singing. My role is to take care of her for the rest of her life.”
After the press conference the newlyweds hosted a party for family and close friends to “complete” the wedding process. Well, except for the honeymoon, which will be on the romantic Italian island of Capri. The destination was Tata’s choice, and Mor said he has no objection. He’s probably keen to see what Capri has that Phuket doesn’t.
