Excommunication does not exist in Islam

Re: "Excommunicate jihadists in the name of Muslims," Letters, August 26.

Letter-writer JC Wilcox needs to do a little more research before asking why “the [Islamic] hierarchy” doesn’t excommunicate jihadists. He could easily have found the answer by going to Wikipedia, which tells us, “Excommunication as it exists in Christian faiths does not exist in Islam ... There is no universally accepted authority in Islamic law.” AlMasjid.com adds, “There is no formal clergy, no ordaining body and no hierarchy.” Much less an “official Islamic policy”.
Then who’s in charge? Nobody’s in charge. Is that a bad thing? Right now the so-called Islamic State and Boko Haram are both trying to establish caliphates. That will put somebody in charge. Is that what we want?
