Even though the writer Chularat Saengpassa makes a valid point in that it is imperative for the new government to take a cautious and holistic approach in reforming the country’s education, I think she is being too fearful. Why?
First, the past governments have done virtually nothing to reform the country’s education system. The only change that we saw was bigger budgets for building taller flagpoles and more expensive school gates that could kill half a dozen students at once when they collapse.
Second, if the past governments were courageous enough to have taken a trial-and-error approach in the educational development of our country, we would not have been stuck for so long today. There is no time for postponing reform now.
Thirdly, Prime Minister General Prayuth Chan-ocha is in a perfect position to change the country’s education system for the better. His being a soldier should be taken as a plus, because it means he is a man of decision.
All Prayuth needs is a strong enough will to do it, and we should encourage him.
