Poke the serious blokes who shop at Gin and Milk and you might get a giggle

AFTER RUNNING the multi-brand womenswear store the Wonder Room at Siam Center for over a year, Siam Piwat – the company that operates the mall – has turned its attention to fashion-conscious men. Gin and Milk, with all the best brands meeting all guys’ needs from head to toe, has just opened.
Gin and Milk – the name is meant to evoke charming guys who conceal their playfulness under solemnity – stocks tailored suits, footwear and accessories from more than 30 local brands and several foreign labels.
The shop boasts classic dark-oak furniture that contrasts with stainless steel hangers to reflect a strong and masculine personality. The wood floor lends a vintage touch and the grey of the fitting-room curtains helps keep the mood serious.
This is where the blokes can have outfits for every occasion made, from a formal suit for black-tie dinners and semi-formal attire for business meetings to casual dress and eye-catching swimwear for leisure times.
One corner is devoted to the brand Meticulous, which has its own flagship store in Siam Square, with an array of top-quality suits and shirts. The shirts are in two styles, a more casual and slim fitting, with longer sleeves, perfect for rolling up for a hard day’s work. The other is the conventional style but in brighter colours and looser in fit.
If you can’t find one that fits your style, get one tailor-made. You choose from an array of fabrics from Thailand, Egypt, India and Japan and pick a collar and cuffs to match, as well as the shape of the torso.
P.mith is another local brand offering nicely tailored shirts, suits and slacks, from the classic slim fit Oxford shirt, and dark-blue striped shirts with white club collars to pinstripe suits and narrow cotton pants. You can individualise your choice further by having your initials embroidered on the collar or sleeves. A selection of pocket squares and pins are also available.
In terms of casual wear, New York-based Thai designer Mel Sangsomsap – who runs the brand SSAP NYC and has shops there and in Tokyo – presents his latest “Sakol Project” collection of shirts made from hand-dyed natural indigo from Sakhon Nakhon, his home province.
Meanwhile Thai brand Leisure Project has a selection of Oxford shirts, oversize jumpers and cotton T-shirts with intergalactic prints in grey, black and cobalt blue.

If you have a passion for denim, Vanorn Bangkok is all homemade in Thai contemporary style with careful attention to detail in the cutting. Another local brand, Doku, uses mostly Japanese raw and washed denim in its two styles of straight-fit and slim-fit clothes.
For smart leather shoes, Mango Mojito is outstanding with its detailing and painting by hand that ensures a truly vintage look. The shoes are mainly casual, in basic brown and grey – smart boots, suede boat shoes, loafers and sandals.
Klud has leather bags and caps in styles to fit every need, while Rudimentary presents minimalist scuba tote bags and clutches and leather sneakers. Solomonmini offers vintage military canvas bags fashioned from used US mailbags and duffel bags.
There’s also a great range of styling products. Get some sheen in your hair or for a rockabilly pompadour. Petroleum-based O’Boy pomade holds the hair firm all day and can smell like caramel, peppermint or peaches. Since its launch last year, the brand has gained popularity here and in Singapore because it’s specially made for the tropical weather.
Gin and Milk’s imported items include Hyper Grand wristwatches that can give every day a fresh perspective with their illustrated interchangeable straps, and Ecua-Andino’s Panama hats in several shades. Premium garment-care products from Mr Black extend the life of denims and Otter Wax leather-care products are ideal for cleaning and protecting the surface.
