Apartment Khunpa’s founder Tul Waitoonkiat is hoping to encourage artists in several fields to get together and brainstorm on ideas by organising what he calls the first ever thought-provoking festival” in the country. Dubbed the “Sala Inspiring Space”, it’s taking place at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre on November 1 and 2.
“We intend ‘Sala Inspiring Space’ as a school of sorts, one that helps people think out of the box” says Tul, during the recent press conference at J Gallery on trendy Soi Thonglor.
The festival combines entertainment with various activities and talks from those involved in different career fields including literature, visual art, fashion, and advertising. There’s also an art exhibition by university students, a market for works of art and boutique clothing, plus music and food and beverages.
The festival will be divided into four salas (pavilions), each home to a separate “think tank”. The first is Sala of Narratives and features Tul, Lek Greasy Cafe, Fong Beer, Nawapol “Ter” Thamrongrattanarit, Sarawut Hengsawad aka Roundfinger, Vip Buraphadeja, Piyakan “Mook” Bootprasert and Komkrit Triwimol.
The second, the Sala of Fashion, is hosted by sisters Klaiduen, Pimdao and Matina Sukhahuta of Sretsis and Painkiller, Wannaporn Posayanon, the executive editor of “Harper's Bazaar Thailand” and Jiradt Pornpanitphan, fashion editor of “Cheeze” and “Looker” magazines.
The Sala of Graphic Design & Advertising features Wee Viraporn, a lecturer at Bangkok University’s School of Fine and Applied Arts, Vorathit “Tap” Kruavanichkit, co-founder of Farm Group, Chanon Yodhong, art director for Genie Records, and Koonklang Khaoputhai, a motion graphic designer from Band of Radical Experimental Design.
The Sala of Fine Art, meanwhile, is manned by Wuthikorn “Der” Kongka, Thaweesak “Lolay” Srithongdee, illustrator Teerawat “O” Tienkaprasit, Hathairat “Oh Futon” Charoenchaichana, and Nualtong Prasanthong.
The festival will also feature shows by Lek Greasy Cafe, Palmy, T-Bone, Sqweez Animal, Yellow Fang, Genes Kasidit, Two Million Thanks, Partime Musician, Desktop Error, Lomosonic, The Yers, Stylist Nonsense, and Jelly Rocket.
“We would like this event to serve as a forum for art lovers or indeed anyone interested in the arts to share their thoughts with other new thinkers,” says Tul.
