Misbehaving monks need to be stopped

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 29, 2014

Today, many news organisations are reporting on the extremely inappropriate behaviour of some monks in Thailand, such as hugging girls or doing drugs. If monks do this, Thais will lose faith in the monks' institution.

Instead of being concerned about a Japanese’s singer’s dress, the Sangha should focus on monks’ behaviour. It’s ridiculous when we hear Thai monks mocking monks in other countries.
Recently in Thailand, the monk who hugged two women was only moved to another temple. The penalty is too soft. This practice broke monk rules violently.
It seems like we cannot trust the monks’ institution to resolve the problems of monks who practice in bad ways.
I think it is time that the institution [Sangha] considers these problems seriously, before it gets to the stage when people do not respect monks anymore.
