Ranked 484th in the world the Chonburi-born launched a series of raids to keep the Japanese opponent at bay before winning the match in just one hour and 27 minutes for her fifth quarter-final appearance this year.
“I studied her game on Tuesday and realized that she liked to keep the ball in play and waited for the opportunity to attack. Against this type of player you have to attack them first and never allowed them to have momentum,” said the 19-year-old, one of the three Thais winning home ITF Circuits this year.
The teenager who lifted up her maiden ITF crown here in May was up 3-0 lead in the second set but served three double faults to drop serves in the following game. She then regrouped her concentration to take full charge again.
“I lost my focus a bit and served poorly in that game. But I told myself to stick to my game plan and keep her under pressure. Luckily I was able to pull myself together quickly,” said Kamonwan who regained her confidence back after producing good results from three ITF circuits in Egypt earlier this month.
“in Egypt I reached two semi-finals and one quarter-finals in the singles and won a doubles title with Victoria Muntea n of France. That gives me a lot of confidence coming to this week especially on my forehand side,” said Kamonwan who lines up a quarter-final clash against local no 1 junior Bunyawi Thamchaiwat, a 7-5 6-2 6-2 victor over Tamachan Momkoonthod.
“I beat her in the second round of the third Circuit that I won. She’s a dangerous player and has improved her backhand shots. I have a tough match waiting for me,” said Kamonwan.
Two more Thais reserved their spots in the last eight. That included former world junior No 1 Noppawan Lertcheewakarn, the seventh seed who dismantled countrywoman Varunya Wongteanchai 6-4 6-1. In the other all Thai affair, Nudnida Luangnam outclassed Nichapa Runtein 6-2 6-3.
In the other second round actions, top seed Hiroko Kuwata of Japan beat Tessah Andrianjafitrimo of France 7-6 6-2 while her compatriot Yuuki Tanaka wasted only one game …Patcharin Cheapchandej 6-1 6-0. Third seed Chanel Simmonds of South Africa beat Tamara Curovic of Serbia who retired at 4-6 0-5 due to injury.
