Re: “US Presidential Race: Trump, Cruz, Rubio trade insults”, World, February 27.

Friday’s debate must have been most entertaining, with that none of the million viewers or moderators expecting the flow of fireworks – name-callings, caustic comments and shoutings – and yet they were hours of wit that one could also teach one how to argue with taste.

Words like “liar”, “lying”, “con-artist”, “nervous basket case”, “choke artist” and “lightweight choker” were luxuriously made by Trump, while the two rivals simply hit back with well researched facts. With that background, one would have thought that a punch-up could result when they stood near to each other – at arms’ length. Yet, all left the meeting with satisfied grins. None uttered threats of suing anyone for libel. In sum, so civilised and so revealing of their thoughts on their national issues!
Contrary to my previous impression of Trump as a typical loudmouth like some Americans, I was impressed with his intelligence and gamesmanship. He repeatedly called Jeb Bush a “low-energy” candidate – it must have sunk Mr Bush’s aspiration.
But can we hope for Thailand to rise from the current politics of immaturity?
