THE SONGKRAN holiday is just about over but for those of you who haven’t had the time or chance to gorge on summer favourites – or are hankering for more – Central Embassy’s premium food court Eathai is still offering a selection of Thai hot season dishes.
Billing itself as the best and most comprehensive offering of Thai food in the world, Eathai combines street food stalls with popular eatery chains from the country’s four regions.
The Eathai corner presents Nam Dok Mai Si Thong Ice Cream (Bt79) paired with sliced fresh mangoes and sticky rice cooked in coconut milk.
Made from nam dok mai and ok rong mangoes, this healthy ice cream has no sugar or preservatives and is made everyday to ensure the freshest of flavours. Khun Nai Amra’s counter too is mango-centric, offering Nam Pla Wan, a sweet and sour dip that’s just perfect with the fruit.
Four Nam Pla Wan sauces are available, made respectively with dried shrimp, fermented Isaan-style fish, a blend of chilli, salt and shrimp and traditional shrimp paste. Each is priced at Bt60.
Duen kaew, fah lan, khiew savoey and kaew mangoes, priced at Bt70 per kilogram, are also on sale along with the much-loved summer combo of mango, sticky rice and coconut milk for Bt100 and Bt140 depending on size.
Popular restaurant Klong Thip has Khao Chae (Bt195), a summer must-eat of rice in fragrant iced water perfumed with candle smoke. It comes with five delectable side dishes featuring deep-fried shallots and crispy egg-wrapped bell peppers stuffed with pork, stir-fried pickled radish and carved vegetables.
Madame Miang Kham and More cafe offers the popular Thai snack Miang Kham (Bt230) where you place pinches of dried shrimp, ginger, chilli, shallot, roasted peanut, sweet sauce and coconut roasted with sugar until crispy in a betel leaf, wrap it up and pop it into your mouth for a full burst of flavour.
Another must-try dish is Naem Pla Tod (Bt150), fish sausage blended with rice flour and pork skin and served with betel leaves and lettuce.
And then there’s the summer desserts: sweet yellow marian plum, salak and toddy palm in sweet syrup along with pickled mangoes and fresh toddy palm juice.
Specialists from Issaya Cooking Studio are also on hand to teach you how to prepare some easy-to-eat Thai dishes.
