"I'm so happy to participate in the Cannes film festival. It’s been a dream of mine since I became a director that our Myanmar movies would eventually get a chance to participate in the festival. Today I’m on the road to that dream coming true. I'll be doing my best to make my dreams a reality. I still cannot believe that I’m in France,” Wira said.
The Cannes film festival chooses the film producers and directors of 10 selected films to participate in film development, allowing them to meet movie scholars around the world and gain knowledge.
In the film development project, chosen directors and producers will gain insight on writing scripts, production, and marketing to international buyers.
The script of “One Summer Day” is written by Aung Min.
Wira is well known for making documentaries.
Wira and Aung Min were among the shortlisted candidates of nine projects selected for the Myanmar Script Fund in November 2016, held in Yangon as part of the fourth Memory Film Festival. The project was also selected for the Locarno Festival Open Doors Locarno Lab in August.
The first edition of the Myanmar Script Fund was designed as a competition and education programme with the nine finalists presenting their film projects in front of an international jury chaired by Oscar-winner Michel Hazanavicius.
The 2017 Myanmar Script Fund will open in May 2017 for the new application process. The competition and coaching session will take place as part of the Memnory International Film Festival 2017 running from November 3 to 12.
“Creating a feature-length film is one of the most challenging adventures for a young director anywhere in the world: Myanmar Script Fund (MSF) aims at identifying and coaching young talents, at the early stage of their script development. The objective is to contribute to the revival of the film industry in Myanmar and winning international exposure for future projects,” said the directors of the Memory Festival and Myanmar Script Fund.
