Our letter to The Nation about the many sleepless nights we endured in northern Nan as a result of the thumping boom of disco parties, village feasts and temple festivals apparently did not go down well with local hoteliers. Much to our surprise we received an angry message from a leading resort in the area, adding insult to injury by implicating that we, with our factual letter to The Nation about the nightly boom-boom in the countryside of Phu Phiang near Nan city, are undermining their hospitality business. Potential hotel guests and other visitors may cancel their travel plans to “peaceful” Nan after learning from your quality newspaper and its popular website about this still ongoing disturbance every night.
I for one know that whatever misery we encounter in life, all too often we have only ourselves to blame. Still it feels a little odd to be told by this Phu Phiang resort manager that we have ourselves caused our sleepless nights. Instead of mailing us an apology and working to solve the problem, the resort’s farang manager told us he was disturbed too – not by the continuous disco noise, but by our letter. It was all our fault. Here is his surprising logic: We should not have come to Nan in the first place! Had we not come to Nan, we would not have experienced the nighttime disco banging and this inconvenient truth would have never been printed in The Nation!
