An early test for Thanathorn: what about those cars?

THURSDAY, MARCH 15, 2018

Re: “Thanathorn party ready for lift-off,” front page leader, March 15.

I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised at the wild public enthusiasm for “young” Mr Thanathorn. But let’s do a reality check. First of all, he’s not young. He’s 39, people. That puts him on the cusp of 40.  Last time I looked, 40 marked the beginning of middle age.
Second, the Thai people have many admirable qualities, but one of the less admirable ones is a weakness for flash. Flash sells well in Thailand. So long as the image is flashy, who cares about substance?  You can’t see substance; it’s hidden by the image, so it may not even exist. Besides, substance is boring. So away with substance: let’s have a flashy image.
Is there anything behind soon-to-be-middle-aged Thanathorn’s flashy image? On March 13, Yingwai Suchaovanich posted a letter in this column (“Public must vet new political animals”) revealing that Mr T is an executive and heir to an auto-parts company that has usurped part of the Bangna-Trat Highway and is using it as a private parking space for some 50 vehicles during peak hours.
If this is true, and if Mr T is so smart and switched on, is it not reasonable to ask if he has stopped this practice? If he has, good for him, and I withdraw the above snarky comments. If not, why not?  The public can judge his expected efficiency as a politician by the speed with which he corrects this shortcoming. Let’s have an update from Yingwai telling us if the cars are gone.
