A master negotiator at work

Re: “Those anointing the Donald as a peacemaker have short memories”, Have Your Say, May 4, The Nation.

Oh dear, I’ve no wish to be rude, but this letter displays such naivety. Kim Jong-un is responding exactly as President Trump intended. Donald Trump is a master of negotiating. It’s not a science that can be learned academically or from within the hallowed halls of diplomacy. That has been proved many times with previous “presidential” administrations, particularly Bill Clinton’s, whose attempt at bribery with Kim’s father failed embarrassingly. Negotiating is an art that few seem to understand but of which Donald Trump is a master. As the president says, if negotiations prove fruitless he will walk away from the table.
Donald Trump has proved throughout his business career and as a candidate in the primaries that he shrewdly analyses his opponents individually. He assesses their weaknesses and acts accordingly. The fact is that Trump’s handling of Kim Jong-un has worked well thus far. Mike Pompeo, US Secretary of State, has spoken in person with the North Korean leader who has agreed to meet President Trump. The leadership of South Korea have openly declared the current progress is due to the words and actions of President Trump.
President Trump, rather like President Reagan with the USSR, has the courage to grasp the nettle that others avoid. He assesses a problem and then decides on solutions while remaining flexible and unpredictable. That’s how he amassed assets of $10 billion as a businessman and ascended to the top job in the world as a politician. Give him a break.
