Re: “Recent science debunks the cholesterol myth”, Have Your Say, January 25.

One problem with many heart disease studies is that they compare one group of meat eaters with another group of meat eaters who all have high cholesterol and then conclude there is no evidence that high cholesterol increases heart disease risk. This is like comparing people who smoke one pack of cigarettes a day to people who smoke two packs a day and concluding there is no evidence that if you smoke less you’ll reduce your risk of lung cancer.
We only learn how dangerous high cholesterol is when we do studies comparing people with very low cholesterol – often below 150 – to people with higher cholesterol.
It’s understandable that Michael Setter urges you not do to research – by doing so you’ll realise he’s a crackpot. I urge readers to google “Heart attacks rare among people with cholesterol below 150”. Or google “Framingham Heart Study”, perhaps the most extensive study ever done on heart disease risk. You’ll see for yourself that Michael Setter is so irresponsible he should be banned from this column.
